RNLI Lifeguards Recruiting for 2016. Do You Have What It Takes?

We may be at the coldest part of the year right now but the RNLI has already started their “Best Summer Job” recruitment campaign for beach lifeguards in 2016. If you’re fit, healthy, 16 or over, and can swim 400m, the RNLI have everything to prepare you for the best summer job around!

This summer thousands of people will flock to the coast to enjoy some sun, sand and sea. It takes a large team of dedicated lifeguards to ensure the safety of the public in the sea, tidal swimming pools and on our beaches during the busy summer months.

New recruits will undergo full training, be given all the necessary equipment, and they'll be paid for their efforts too! Lifeguards tend to come from a range of backgrounds and from all walks of life. Whether it's a student saving for the next term at university or a school teacher looking for a fun and rewarding summer job, the work is appealing to many.

Steve Instance, RNLI Senior Lifeguard Manager, said: "We're looking for strong swimmers who can swim 400m in under 7 minutes and 30 seconds, with a good level of fitness aged over 16 years old. If you have the raw ability and the will to learn we can help get you fit and qualified."

"I can't think of a better way to cure the winter blues than applying to become an RNLI beach lifeguard and get paid to save lives this summer.

"The experience you'll gain this summer as an RNLI beach lifeguard will stay with you for life. You'll work with an inspiring team and make lifelong friends while getting the chance to improve your physical fitness and learn new skills.
"There's nothing better than making the beach your office, getting paid to train and knowing you have the first aid and rescue skills to save someone's life at a moment's notice. It's the best job you'll ever have."

Who do they need?

Depending on the area, and your level of experience, the RNLI are recruiting lifeguards, senior lifeguards and lifeguard supervisors. They also need lifeguard support staff to help run the regional support centres.

To be a lifeguard, you must to be able to complete:

  • a 200m pool swim in under 3½ minutes
  • a 400m pool swim in under 7½ minutes
  • a 25m pool swim underwater and a 25m surface swim consecutively in under 50 seconds
  • a 200m beach run in under 40 seconds.
