Did you catch last month's showdown between Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps at the Arena Pro Swim series in Austin, Texas? The event was the 200 IM final and the pool was packed with some fo the world's top elite swimmers. Check out the full race here:
After the first 50m Lochte is in the lead by one-hundredth of a second, and at 100m Lochte is still ahead. The third 50m has Phelps and Lochte neck and neck on their weakest stroke, breaststroke and it's as they turn for the final length that the pressure really builds up. The final 50m (Freestyle) shows an explosion of power from both athletes as they strive to bring home the victory. Phelps just edges out Lochte with a time of 1:58 flat.
The two American swimmers have been trading world records in this event for a while. Phelps gained the long-course 200 IM world record in 2003 for the first time and Lochte broke it in 2009 at the world championships in Italy.
After the race, Michael says, “Ryan (Lochte) and I have had a lot of great swims with one another. You know, joking around with him beforehand, I kinda knew we were going to try to battle it out and I knew it would come down to the touch. He's a great racer and someone I always look forward to getting in the water with”
He goes on to talk a bit about Olympic trials and the year ahead.
