ProSwimwear are welcoming a new ambassador into the team… meet Brodie Williams! He will be reviewing products, sharing his stories and knowledge and giving us an insight into his world of swimming. So, rather than doing the talking for him, let Brodie introduce himself to you all…
Hi! My name is Brodie Williams. I was born and have lived all my life in Street, Somerset just around the corner from Millfield pool… which turned out to be quite handy!
I started swimming at the age of 2 in learn to swim classes at my local pool. I loved swimming straight away however, I was nervous to remove my arm bands so spent a good few months swimming with them deflated!
At age 8 I joined the local swim club Street and District where I swam in my first competitive race. I swam in all the local competitions followed by the counties, regionals and then at aged 11 my first nationals in Sheffield.
At 13 I got a scholarship to Millfield school for swimming and I have never looked back. I have swum at European juniors, World Juniors, International Competitions and the Europeans in Glasgow 2018. I made the semi-finals for the 100/200 back and was part of the IM relay gold winning team!
I would have to say that my best stroke is backstroke however my favourite, and the stroke I enjoy most, would definitely be freestyle.
My main hobby outside of swimming is my dog Mabel. She is an apricot Cockapoo and her personality is mad… she is adorable. One of my favourite things about her is when she sleeps at the end of my bed after training at the pool. I also spend some of my free time playing Xbox with friends.
A consultant doctor once told me that as I have a permanent perforated ear drum that I could breathe out of my ear – I am yet to find out if this is true….
My Favourite Moments from Swimming
My favourite moment so far must be breaking the 2-minute barrier at world juniors in the 200 backstroke. The atmosphere was amazing, and the team spirit was brilliant. That night we went to the hard rock café for steak and we all had desert, which was 1000+ calories but was so good and so worth it.
Some of my other favourite swimming moments definitely revolve around family. I have an older brother and younger sister and we spent a lot of our childhood at swimming pools. The competition with my brother was great! We even had our own 50 freestyle family trophy which was engraved after every competition to see who was the fastest. This was Liam’s best event and even today I am still only just a little bit faster than his best time.
My First Competitions
My first ever competition was the Somerset Counties at the age of 9. Well when I say 9 I was 9 at the end of the competition which was held over 4 weeks. I was one of the youngest swimmers there.
My first race was the 200 backstroke. I had never competed before, so I was really nervous, and the Hutton Moor swimming pool seemed to be really big. Not really understanding how to race, I turned too quickly into the walls. Despite being the fastest swimmer in the 9-year-old age group I was disqualified and as you can imagine it was quite upsetting. Not as upsetting as the second race though, which was the 200 IM, again not knowing the race I swam a backstroke tumble turn onto my front instead of a back to breast turn so I was disqualified again!
Despite being disqualified I learnt a lot from these swims!
One of my favourite trips away competing was the Ontario Canada International Junior meet because it was snowing and nearly Christmas. I loved the meet and the team I was with and my swims weren’t bad either.
My Favourite Swimmer
Cesar Ciello is my all-time favourite swimmer as to go faster than 21 seconds for the 50 freestyle is unnatural but incredible. Recently Kristoff Milak taking down Michael Phelps’ record in the 200 fly was an unbelievable race to watch and very inspiring.
Thanks Brodie for that great introduction! We are excited to have you on the ProSwimwear Team!
