Three Tips To Improve Your Swimming Pace
- 30 Jun 2023
Improving your swimming pace is crucial for every swimmer because it not only helps you conserve energy but also enhances your efficiency in the water, enabling better forward propulsion.
There are not many secrets to be learnt on how to improve your swim pace, but here are three tips to help your swim become more under control with a consistent and efficient rhythm and pace.
1. Focus On Position
Improving your swim pace and speed in the water greatly depends on your body position. Even the tiniest adjustments in your head, hips, or legs can significantly impact the effectiveness of your arm stroke! To enhance your position in the water, consider using a swim snorkel. It allows you to concentrate on the alignment of your head and shoulders, ultimately improving your overall alignment in the water.
2. A Smooth Arm Stroke
Many swimmers often make the mistake of thinking that an alternating arm stroke is the right way to swim. However, if you want to glide through the water faster, it's actually a smooth round arm stroke (used in butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle) that does the trick.
Your arm movement generates around 70% of the power you need to move forward while swimming freestyle, and the key is in the pull and push motion. Work on perfecting your pull and push techniques to glide through the water more effectively.
3. Keep body balanced
It's crucial to give proper attention to your body posture. Your abdominal muscles play a significant role in ensuring you maintain the correct position, enabling you to glide through the water with greater speed.
You can use a pullbuoy to help you to improve your balance and arm speed. This removes the concentration on your legs and allows you to focus on just your arms and your core, helping you to learn how to keep your body balanced properly in the water.
