Olivia Smoliga was born in Glenview, Illinois with parents of Polish heritage. Smoliga attended her local school in Glenview and specialised in backstroke and freestyle at her local swim clubs.
Her first international success came at the 2012 World Short Course Championships in Istanbul, where she won gold in the 100m backstroke. She has signed a long-term deal with FINIS to help develop their tech suits in the run up to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Olivia Smoliga won a gold medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as part of the USA's 4x100m medley relay team. She also has two relay world titles to her name, winning gold twice at Budapest in 2017 as part of the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley.
The 2018 Short Course World Championships saw Olivia win eight gold medals, across six relay events and two individual events. At the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju Smoliga secured another gold – in the 50 metre back with a time of 27.33, breaking her own American record in the process.
