Why elite swimmers choose the Speedo LZR Racer X

It is the tech suit of choice for many top Olympic gold medallists such as Missy Franklin, Nathan Adrian, Conor Dwyer and Pernille Blume, but what is it about the Speedo LZR Racer X that makes it so popular among international swimmers?

A racing suit with an extremely rich history in racing, the original Speedo LZR tech suit burst on to the scene at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was worn by 95% of swimmers who won medals.

Since then, Speedo have continued to develop and improve their racing swimwear technology at their Aqualab, a high performance research facility in Nottingham.

Thorough research and testing, along with crucial feedback from elite swimmers, goes into developing Speedo's newest racing jammers and kneeskins.

We take a look at the innovative technology behind the Speedo LZR Racer X, and examine how it has been designed to be the brand's fastest racing suit yet.

High compression fabrics

LZR Racer X jammers and kneeskins are constructed using two fabrics exclusive to Speedo, called LZR Racer CompreX and LZR Racer PulseLite.

CompreX is Speedo's highest compression fabric and targets major muscle groups such as the hips, glutes and quads using smart-stretch technology.

This means the LZR Racer X fabric is able to provide compression horizontally while stretching vertically to give swimmers the full range of movement required in the pool.

This high compression helps to reduce drag in the water, while also increasing the swimmer's muscle efficiency.

Support seams

Speedo have introduced maximised support seams to 'improve the linkage of the body's muscular kinetic chain'.

In simple terms, these seams help to connect major muscles to promote an improved body position in the water and promoting blood flow throughout the body,

The support seam is designed to intersect at the hip bone, which allows rotation, and then run across the swimmer's lower back in an 'X' shape. This helps to maintain a better body position in the water and a high leg kick.

Kneeskin 'ab activators'

Another innovation are the Ab Activators used in the LZR Racer X kneesuits. These are laser cut panels in the tech suit's core liner, and they've been developed to assist with improved body alignment in the water.

Improved jammer waistband

Speedo have developed a soft but secure waistband by using microfibre and silicone strips, as well as anti-friction cord technology to deliver even tension and a reliable fit.
