Weston-super-Mare Open Water Development Series Starts in Style

Weston-super-Mare Open Water Development Series

The Weston-super-Mare Open Water Development Series was launched in fine style on Sunday morning at Clevedon Marine Lake.

Stormy weather forced the cancellation of the first scheduled event in the open water swimming series a fortnight ago, but there were no such worries this weekend as the lake was bathed in sunshine.

The meet included a 1k taster event as well as 2k, 3k and 5k swims, and has been organised to boost the profile of open water swimming while also helping to introduce it to the next generation of open water swimmers.

ProSwimwear supported the event, with business development manager Matt Puddy setting up a swim shop at the event headquarters (pictured right).

Matt said: "The series provides us with an opportunity to work in and educate the local community. We provided a 10% discount on all wetsuit lines over the weekend, offered an emergency swim shop on the day, and treated competitors and the public to summer sale products."

Swimmers from hosts Weston-super-Mare Swimming Club were joined in the water from clubs across the region.

Winners on the day were Amos Starkey (24.13) in the 2k swim, Miles Ward (34.16) in the 3k and James King (59.13) in the 5k. Millfield's Lawrence Martindale (12.05) swam the fastest time in the 1k taster swim.

The next meet in the series will be held at Clevedon Marine Lake on Sunday, September 16, starting at midday. Closing date for entries is September 2. For more information or an application form, visit the Weston-super-Mare Open Water Development Series page.
