Livingston and district swimming club

Swimmers from Livingston and District Dolphins Amateur Swimming Club started the year with a victory at their annual development gala recently. The swimming event gives youngsters the chance to try out their competitive swimming skills in a race-day atmosphere. The gala is aimed at children aged under 11 years of age and was attended by over 200 swimmers from 17 swimming clubs around Scotland.

No less than one hundred and eight new personal bests were set by the Dolphins swimmers during the competition, showing just how hard the club members have been working during their training sessions!

The gala event featured demonstrations swims by University of Edinburgh swimmer Tain Bruce before each event. This was an excellent chance for the youngsters to see a more developed swimmer in the pool, perhaps something they could be aiming towards themselves in the next few years?

Head coach, Graeme Torrance, said: “What a great day this has been for our young swimmers.

“The swimming demonstration from Tain Bruce, who recently represented Scotland at the Youth Commonwealth Games, before the start of each event was great for the swimmers and coaches to see.

“For some of our swimmers, this was their first experience of a gala competition and it has been brilliant to see them all swim so well.”

The aim of development galas is to inspire and excite our young swimmers, to promote a love for the sport and competition in general. Development galas are the proving ground, this is where many sporting dreams begin, at the youth level of competition. This is the time when swimmers can be instilled with a lifelong passion for the sport and a drive to make themselves the best that they can be. For some, this happens outside of the swimming pool, but nonetheless the lessons/skills learned from swimming, training and competing come in very useful in many aspects of life in later years.

Livingston and District Dolphins Amateur Club are the very first club in Scotland to achieve Scottish Swimming accreditation for both it's swim school and development squads. This shows that the club adheres to the best standards and practices in their learn to swim and development structures. In other words they're doing great and keeping standards high!
