Jack Burnell claimed his first win of the 2018 FINA/HOSA Marathon Swim World Series in China on Sunday.

Burnell, who claimed a silver in the Seychelles and a bronze in Portugal earlier in the season, won a thrilling men's 10km race at Chun'An in a time of 1:56:34.8.

He beat Germany's Rob Muffels by just 0.1 seconds, while Italian pool swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri was only a little further back to take the bronze in 1:56:35.3.

Swimmers were faced with a warm water temperature of 29°C at the seventh round of the series, and Burnell said: "It is my first time in Qiandao Lake and the water is very hot at last.

"I tried to save energy all the way and came out first. My final sprint was pretty good, especially the last two, three strokes."

Rio Olympic champion Ferry Weertman finished fourth, in 1:56.36.8. He still leads the series going into the final round at Abu Dhabi on November 9.

"The fourth place was really good and I did not have the energy to finish stronger," was the honest assessment from Weertman. "I am happy I keep the top position on the overall rankings."

Xin Xin won gold in the women's race at her home round. Her victory in a time of 2:06:22.6 was her second consectutive win in the series, having triumphed in Canada last time out.

Germany's Leonie Beck took silver in 2:06:23.4, while Brazil's Ana Marcela Cunha claimed the bronze in 2:06:23.5. 2016 Olympic champion Sharon Van Rouwendaal had to settle for fourth place.

Other British swimmers competing were Tobias Robinson and Jazz Carlin. Robinson was 12tj in the men's race, but Carlin was forced to withdraw from the women's race part way through due to illness.
