The locations for five new national swimming performance centres have been announced by Swim England.

The five Swim England Performance Centres will be based at High Wycombe, Leeds, Guildford, Manchester and Nottingham where they will be run in association with clubs and universities.

It is the result of a new Performance Centre Programme scheme launched earlier this year to improve the support offered to promising young swimmers across the country.

Organisations nationwide were invited to apply to be part of the scheme, which Swim England's Head of Talent for Swimming Grant Robins believes will help more of the country's brightest swimming prospects reach the pinnacle of the sport.

Robins said: "The Performance Centre project is an exciting initiative that will expand and extend the Swim England Talent Programme.

"The Performance Centres link swimming clubs and universities to support the development of young swimmers both in the pool and academically.

"By creating a number of centres, swimmers will be able to move from the junior to senior swimming ranks while continuing their studies.

"It will also help to make the transition to the British Swimming World Class programme more accessible, leading to more English athletes reaching the highest levels of the sport."

The five new centres will receive support through funding, coaching and technical advice from Swim England's Talent Team.

Swim England Sport Development Director, George Wood, added: "We are incredibly proud to be working with local partners to develop these Swim England Performance Centres.

"We are passionate about providing our club members with opportunities to keep training and by working with local universities, this will enable them to achieve both their academic and swimming potential.

"We look forward to supporting the Swim England Performance Centres and how we can expand the programme in the future."

The five clubs involved are Guildford City Swimming Club, Leeds Swimming Club, City of Manchester Aquatics Swim Team (COMAST), Nova Centurion Swimming Club and Wycombe District Swimming Club.

The universities involved are the University of Surrey, the University of Leeds/Leeds Beckett University, Manchester Metropolitan University, Nottingham University and Buckinghamshire New University.
