Ben Proud and the men's 4x100m medley relay team earned two more gold medals for Great Britain on the final evening of swimming action at the 2018 European Championships.

Proud won a close final in 21.34 in the men's 50m freestyle final, getting the better of Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev by 0.10 seconds. Italian Andrea Vergani claimed the bronze in 21.68.

Proud's winning time was slower than his semi-final PB, which he admitted finding a little frustrating.

"The swim itself was a little disappointing, so I have mixed emotions," he said. "Nowadays it's about constant improvements for me, so to have gone slower in the final than in the semis is something I need to look at for future meets.

"I'm happy to have swum well last night - for me I'll look at that race, see what went well and then be happy with the overall result."

Later in the evening, the relay team of Nick Pyle, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott turned on the style to claim a fine victory in 3:30.44, beating Russia and Germany to the top of the podium.

For Peaty, it completed a third successive quadruple at the European Championships, having altready won gold in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, and the 4x100m mixed relay.

Peaty, who also picked up a trophy for LEN's athlete of the year, said: "Britain is looking strong at the minute individually and in relays.

"Sometimes I've got too caught up in the outcome with people talking about world records as soon as I did the heats and asking if I was going to get the four gold medals.

"I have to take each stroke as it comes, each event as it comes and not got caught up in the outcomes of everything and that's been a massive learning curve that has hopefully been set up for the rest of my career."

Imogen Clark claimed a silver medal behind Russian great Yuliya Efimova, who won the 50m breaststroke title for her third gold of the championships. Efimova touched first in 29.81, followed by Clark in 30.34.

Max Litchfield also bagged a silver medal, swimming a 4:11.00 in the 400m individual medley final to chase home David Verraszto (4:10.65).

James Guy claimed a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly, with a time of 51.42. He finished behind gold medallist Piero Codia in 50.64, and silver medallist Mehdy Metella in 51.24.

Holly Hibbott also won a bronze medal as she finished third in the 400m freestyle final, with a time of 4:05.01. She finished behind winner Simona Quadarella (4:03.35) and Ajna Kesely (4:03.57).

The women's 4x100m medley relay team also bagged a bronze behind Russia and Denmark. The team featured Georgia Davies, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, Alys Thomas and Freya Anderson.

Elsewhere, Sarah Sjöström continued her dominance by picking up her fourth gold medal of the championships.
She won the 50m butterfly final in 25.16, adding to 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly titles she's already claimed in Glasgow.
