Michael Phelps Will Defend Gold Medal at 2016 Olympics

Finishing in first place at the USA Swimming Olympic trials on Saturday, Michael Phelps has secured the chance to defend his 100-meter butterfly gold medal in Brazil. Phelps finished the event with a time of 51 seconds flat, ahead of Tim Shields who finished with a time of 51.20. Michael Phelps

This opportunity means that Phelps could become the first swimmer to win four consecutive gold medals in the same event. He also has the chance to enter the 200 meter individual medley, which he has already qualified for. Phelps will have to contend with his USA team-mate Ryan Lochte in the Individual Medley (the only individual event that Lochte has qualified for).

Katie Ledecky posted an impressive time of 8:10.32 in the 800-meter freestyle, hitting the wall long before any one else. Ledecky took gold in the 800 Freestyle in London 2012, and is tipped to defend the gold medal in Rio. Look out for her in the 200 and 400 meter Freestyle events, she's the favourite to win all three as it stands.

Among the other qualifiers for team USA are Nathan Adrian, Anthony Ervin and Missy Franklin - making for a strong squad heading down to Brazil this August.
